The Rosens were having a picnic on the lawn in Malmo, Sweden. “Mom, Dad,
when am I going to see Annemarie again?” Ellen asked.
“When the war ends,” her father replied. It was a nice sunny day in May. After a few hours have past the Rosens went back to their log house. When a few minutes later they heard a knock on the door. A man yelled, “Mail!” Mr. Rosen answered the door.
“Thank you!” Mr. Rosen said. He looked at the note.
“It’s from Annemarie,” Ellen’s father said. So Ellen took the note and she read it out loud,
“Dear Ellen, how are you and your family? I have exciting news to tell you. The war has ended! Aren’t you excited? Now you can come home now. Well I hope I can see you soon.” Take care,
Annemarie.
The Rosens were all excited that they danced around the room.
“Now we can go back to Denmark!” Ellen yelled with excitement. When the Rosens found out that the war has ended, it took the Rosens about a
month to get ready to leave Sweden and go to Denmark. “I can’t wait to see Annemarie again!” Ellen exclaimed.
Mrs. Rosen said, “We know, maybe you could send a note back to her.”
“You could tell her that we will probably be leaving Sweden in a few weeks.” Mr. Rosen said.
“Okay” Ellen said. “I am going to ask her if she still has my “Star of David” necklace. So Ellen sat down with a pen in her hand and a piece of paper on the table and started writing that she misses her and asked her about all the important things that are happening.
A few weeks has passed. Annemarie got the note about a few days later. The Rosens can finally leave Sweden to go to Denmark. She had to tell Uncle Henrik this.
They packed up their bags and headed off on a trail where there were people with boats. “Maybe we can get a ride with someone.” Mrs. Rosen said. The Rosens went to the docks and asked each of them if they could get a ride to Denmark. One girl said that she could bring them to Denmark on her boat. She introduced herself, “I am Allie Hinker.”
“We are the Rosens.” Mr. Rosen said.
“Will you be able to take us to Copenhagen, Denmark?” Ellen asked.
Allie Hinker said, “Yes!”
When Allie said yes to Ellen, she jumped with joy. So they all were helping to pack the bags on the boat and they drove off. “How long will it take to get to Denmark?” Ellen asked cheerfully.
“Maybe in a few hours.” Allie replied. While Allie was driving the boat, Ellen fell asleep because it was so early in the morning. She fell asleep for about twenty minutes and woke up. She saw her mother brushing her hair and Papa talking to Allie. She heard Papa ask,
“Where are you from, Allie?”
“I am from Sweden. I have two boys back at home. A few hours have past and they were almost to Denmark.
“What are we having to eat?” Ellen asked.
“Fish of course!” Allie said. Ellen and her parents made it through the night. They woke up so early that the sun part of the sun wasn’t out yet. An hour and a half has passed. They were at Denmark. They could tell that they were in Denmark because Annemarie remembered the harbor where Uncle Henrik went to every morning. Annemarie also saw the button shop, where mother used to always tell Annemarie and Kirsti to go for buttons.
“We are here!” Allie yelled. Ellen saw Annemarie and her family waiting for them Ellen got off the boat and gave Annemarie a hug.
“I am so happy to see you!” Annemarie said.
“Me too!” Ellen said. The Rosens were unloading the boat and they went home to celebrate. They had applesauce, and a whole bunch of other things, such as potatoes, tea, and sugar.
“Here is you necklace Ellen!” Annemarie said.
“Thank You!” Ellen said.
They gave each other a big hug. “I’m glad to see you!” Ellen said.
“I am so glad to see you too!” Annemarie said
